In the former process, iron ore is the main raw material. In an electric furnace, scrap iron is used and occasionally also sponge iron. Sponge is an intermediate product, which is produced from iron ore by means of direct reduction (= DRI or directly reduced iron) and that is then further reduced and smelted in an electric furnace. The primary methods of potash ore processing are flotation (mechanical method) and hot leaching (chemical method). JSC Belaruskali uses both methods: Productions Units 1, 2 and 3 process the potash ore by flotation and Production Unit 4 uses the hot leaching method. The process starts in the center of the wheel with the three main ingredients of iron in the form of iron ore, coke and lime, which are fed into a blast furnace to produce molten iron.
