Date facilities began operation: 1989 Ilmenite, natural rutile and zircon are transported to the Smelter by rail from an open-pit mine and concentration plant in Brand-se-Baai. The ilmenite is processed in furnaces to produce saleable titanium dioxide slag and pig iron, while the zircon and natural rutile is stored on site for export. 1 Gravity separation In rutile ore beneficiation process, there are two main uses for gravity separation: one is for the sorting of rutile ore with coarser grain size, another one is for the tailing work of fine-grain rutile, generally used for pre-treatment before flotation, which can effectively remove the slime and can remove part of the gangue. Rutile is known as a “high-grade” feedstock for pigment manufacture as it requires significantly less processing than other feedstocks in the pigment manufacturing process. The stockpiles are processed using world-class machineries like High Tension Roll separators from Corona Stat, Australia, Rare Earth Magnetic & Roll Separators and Induced Roll Separator of Eriez The Manufacturing Plant at KMML comprises the Mineral Separation Unit and the TP Unit (Ilmenite Beneficiation Plant, Acid Regeneration Plant, Pigment Production Plant, Oxygen Plant & Utility Section). The raw Ilmenite obtained from the Mineral Separation Unit is taken to the manufacturing facility for further processing.
