(2020), “Environmental Impacts of Illegal Small Scale Mining Oct 28, 2015 Small scale mining has been existence for decades in Ghana and has been noted for a source of employment to 96% of 52,000 Ghanaians working in the mining industry (Ghana National Commission UNESCO). The Ministry of Land and Natural Resources has prohibited mining close to rivers, forest, water bodies and site close to public infrastructure and environmental impacts of small-scale gold mining in Ghana, and to prescribe a series of recommen-dations for improving environmental performance in the industry. The paper begins by providing a general overview of small-scale gold mining and its environmental impacts. Next, the paper discusses the state of the Ghanaian small-scale gold-mining Sep 25, 2019 Artisanal and small scale mining accounts for 35% of Ghana’s total gold production. For many years, small-scale mining suffered benign neglect from the state which focused on large-scale mining. Table 1 presents historically, the contribution of the mining sector to government revenue, value added and employment in Ghana. Surface mining is the dominant method of mining used by small-scale mining artisans due to its cost effectiveness, low capital intensity and minimal technical skill requirement.
